Risk Rating Matrix

The HSWA requires workplaces to identify the likelihood of an event occurring, and degree of harm should it occur. Use a risk rating matrix to determine the level of risk, then prioritise management of the highest levels of risk.

Risk rating matrix definitions

Degree of harm

  • Very minor harm – no treatment
  • Minor harm – basic first aid
  • Moderate - first aid/medical treatment is required.
  • Serious - extensive injury
  • Death or permanent disability

Likelihood

  • Almost certain = Expected and almost inevitable
  • Very Likely = Expected – not surprised when it does
  • Likely = Might occur next 2- 10 years
  • Unlikely = could occur but would be surprised
  • Very unlikely = Highly unexpected i.e. not in the next 50 years
