Risk Rating Matrix
The HSWA requires workplaces to identify the likelihood of an event occurring, and degree of harm should it occur. Use a risk rating matrix to determine the level of risk, then prioritise management of the highest levels of risk.

Degree of harm
- Very minor harm – no treatment
- Minor harm – basic first aid
- Moderate - first aid/medical treatment is required.
- Serious - extensive injury
- Death or permanent disability
Likelihood
- Almost certain = Expected and almost inevitable
- Very Likely = Expected – not surprised when it does
- Likely = Might occur next 2- 10 years
- Unlikely = could occur but would be surprised
- Very unlikely = Highly unexpected i.e. not in the next 50 years
